Tips for Decorating in Modern Coastal Cottage Style

One of the things I get asked the most is for advice on decorating with coastal decor. My first question is usually, “What kind of coastal decor do you want?”. Coastal decor is my favorite, but one of the fun things about it is how many different variations there are. Today I’m sharing my take on coastal cottage decor that doesn’t feel like your Granny’s house. No offense to Granny. :) We’ll call it “Modern Coastal Cottage”.

After searching for rugs for my own home over the years, I have a few staple pieces that will work for almost any coastal style. This light sand colored jute rug with tassels is the perfect neutral starting point. People always want to know how soft it is and to that I say that it’s the softest natural material you can get! It’s the same one I have in my living room.
From there, I found some abstract coastal art with a mix of beachy blue colors. The throws come in multiple colors too, but the blue hues match the painting so well. I also love the subtle pattern.
For a cottage style, nothing should feel too fancy. Aim for comfort and durable, but soft textures. This woven rope basket is a great way to store throws or books next to a comfy chair.
Reminiscent of the horizontal lines where the ocean meets the sky, a blue striped throw pillow is another classic staple in cottage and coastal decor.. This pattern has a little edge to it, don’t you think? It puts the “modern” in Modern Coastal Cottage. ;}
Another way to ensure that your space doesn’t feel too frumpy is by using shiny chrome or nickel and accents that have straight lines and angles. These lanterns check both of those boxes.
I went with light wood, woven patterns and natural textures for a laid back look.
You can find a ton of affordable accent table options online to complete your space. I like the pattern on this side table. It seems a bit more modern than the typical ‘x’ design, but any of the options below would look nice.
