It’s the time of year when cleaning, organizing and purging just feels like the natural thing to do! I’ve made my way from room to room, space to space, slowly getting rid of unused items and organizing what is left. Today, I’m focusing on how I manage my excess throw pillows and covers, because most of us home decor enthusiasts just can’t get enough of them.

I have over 30 throw pillows that I use throughout my house, not including the queen/king bed pillows. I probably have “enough” at this point, but don’t judge me if I change my mind. Now, when I want to switch up the look of my pillows, I only buy the pillow covers because I have enough pillows for the couches and bedrooms and a cover is much easier to take off and store than the entire pillow. I used to keep my pillow covers folded and stacked in bins under the guest room bed, but I was running out of space. The truth is that I just wasn’t using the right folding and storage techniques to maximize the space I already had set aside for the pillow covers.

I got a little sloppy with how I was putting the covers away when I was ready to switch them out.

Yes, I’ll admit that Marie Kondo did have a bit of an influence on the way that I looked at my folding strategy. I realized that, rather than lay out the pillow covers on top of each other, I should pack them neatly side by side so that I can see all of my cover options without digging through a pile of fabric.

Isn’t it satisfying to see the neat little rows of covers? All the heart eyes!

The majority of my pillow covers are 20x20 so I folded the square in half, then folded it in thirds to make a neat little rectangle. When you put them all in a row, you save space and are suddenly able to see your entire collection! The small gray bands are the tie backs that came with my curtains. I don’t use them on my curtains, but I’ve kept them so that when I’m searching for gray accessories I can take them with me to the store to do a fabric match. ;)

A side note about storing pillow inserts: I don’t really need to store my actual pillow inserts because I just switch out the covers, but I do only buy down filled or synthetic filled pillows which can be flattened right out in an air tight bag if you do need to store them in a closet or under the bed.

Once everything is folded and given a neat little place to live, just close the cover of your bin and slide the bin back into storage! It’s such a good feeling knowing that you’re one step closer to a perfectly tidy home!

Sending Sunshine,

Jessica
